2009 Bilingual Poetry Contest Details

HLAFSA invites you to participate in its 7th annual poetry contest. This year’s theme will be “Vision” and requires that the poem be written in both Spanish and English. Entries will be judged in two separate groups:

  • 8-9th grade students
    • First place receives $150
    • Second place receives $100
  • 10-12th grade students
    • First place receives $150
    • Second place receives $100

Entries must be received by March 1, 2009

Rules of the Contest

Criteria/Submission

  • There is no entry fee.
  • Write two poems about VISION/VISIÓN, one in Spanish and one in English. The poems should reflect an understanding of the subject.
  • Each poem will have a maximum length of one page (8 ½ x 11”, double-spaced, plain white paper, typed or computer-generated, minimum font size of 12). Provide 7 copies in a sealed envelope.
  • On a separate page enclosed in the envelope, the entrant must list: name of the poems, the student name, address, school, grade, teacher’s name, and phone number(s) of entrant and teacher.
  • Entries are confidential and will not be returned.
  • The use of profanity, violence or sexually explicit words and situations is not acceptable.
  • Entries must be received and postmarked by March 1, 2009.

Criteria/Judging

  • Entries will be judged in two groups: 8 & 9 grade, and 10-12 grades.
  • Judging will be completed by April 2009.
  • List of all winners will be sent to the teachers.
  • List of all winners will be posted on the HLAFSA Website.
  • Decisions of the judging committee are final.

Criteria/Award

  • All intellectual rights remain with the poets.
  • Prizes: 8 & 9 1st $150, second $100; 10 & 12 1st $150, second $100
  • Special prize for 9th grade poems ($50), Megan’s Award.
  • To receive the prize, presence is required at the award ceremony on May 11th, from 5 to 6:30 pm at the Rag Tag Cine Café, along with the poet’s teacher.
  • Publication of the winners’ poems in the HLAFSA Web site, and in a limited Edition Pamphlet.
