The Dream of a Child
At Nine years of age
She has seen the world
She has seen the violence that riddles her neighborhood streets
Grown men fighting, and children crying
She has witnessed abusive love, and households divided
She has experienced true fear
Sitting frozen in her room, waiting for the next shout, the next gunshot to change her world
She has felt the knot in her belly
Tightening slowly from persistent hunger
She has looked deep into her mother's eyes
And seen the silent tears of failure
But each night, before she drifts into a fitful sleep
She sees her neighborhood streets
Filled with sunlight and ringing with the sound of children's laughter
She sees an unbroken family, walking hand-in-hand, smiles etched across their faces
She experiences a sense of peace and relaxation
Enjoying life and living for the future
Thirst quenched, hunger satiusfied
Reveling in the glories of childhood
She looks deep into her mother's eyes
Where not a trace of fear, of guilt, of regret can be found
These are her visions
Her dream for the future
